On December 23, 1919, Gaetano Magnotta, aged sxteen, arrived in Ellis Island from Italy.

For many years, Gaetano worked in New York City for custom tailors and furriers. In 1934, he opened his own haberdashery in Chappaqua, NY.

The store remains a fixture on 53 King Street in downtown Chappaqua. It evolved into a cleaning business, as the town grew from a rural, quiet hamlet to a bustling town filled with commuters and suburbanites.  Whereas many local stores survive only briefly, Chappaqua Cleaners remains a family-operated business, managed today by Gaetano's son, John Magnotta and his grandchildren, Tony, Maria, Joe, John, Tracey and Christina.
